Originally written by jazz composer Gerald Wilson in tribute to Mexican bullfighter José Ramón Tirado, El Chicano’s 1970 version became a crossover hit and an East L.A. anthem. Its unmistakable groove later resurfaced in Kid Frost’s “La Raza,” connecting Black jazz, Chicano soul, and West Coast hip-hop across generations.
